Last week as I was looking at photos, I found out about an abattoir/slaughterhouse that had been discontinued since the late 90s, but still left vacant, which is an unusual thing for the government to do. Ever since my first time stepping into deserted, messed up places, something inside me flickered and before I knew it, I had a quest to find and go to as many of these locations as I can. There is something so fascinating about venturing into these long time uninhabited places and discovering things about it that once existed.

The thing was that it was Chinese New Year’s last week, and being in Hong Kong with people of this culture, going to a place like a slaughterhouse was a highly “unlucky” and ominous thing to do. But I really, really wanted to go. So I did. And fortunately E. agreed to come along with me.

We basically sneaked in, as there was a security guard at the front gates, which kind of brought me back to the feeling of high school when we used to sneak into the school pool for late night swimming; good times.

But skipping most of the irrelevant details, stepping into this slaughterhouse really confirmed one thing for me: that my vegetarian/vegan choice is something I don’t regret. There can’t be any regrets.
